Refusing to Forget: The Life of Jovita Idar

Jovita Idar was a journalist, teacher, nurse, feminist and civil rights pioneer who fought for the rights of Mexicans and Mexican Americans living in South Texas in the early 20th century. Throughout her life, Idar took a stand against oppression and advocated equality and freedom. The purpose of this lesson plan is to encourage the discussion and remembrance of a hero and to gain a better understanding of the context of Jovita Idar’s advocacy. While our nation’s history has recognized other civil rights activists, we have yet to fully recognize the accomplishments of this Laredo, Texas, native or to give her the proper place in our state’s historical memory.
