Legislative Updates
You can find the bills we’re tracking this session within our Georgia Coalition for Education Justice bill tracker. These include bills targeting trans students, impacting education funding, furthering the school-to-prison pipeline, and attacking immigrant students and families. Here’s your brief recap of bill changes from last week.
Good Bills to Support!
- HB 310 was filed last week! It would provide funding to pay student-teachers for their work in our public schools.
Bad Bills to Oppose!
- SB 21 increases penalties for government bodies and employees who don’t work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The bill passed out of Senate Public Safety and on to Rules last Wednesday.
- Another anti-trans bill, HB 267, was filed last week.
Bills We are Monitoring
- HB 12 & SB 44 which lower the required minimum millage rate (property tax rate) and add an equalization reduction if districts do not meet that minimum rater. Last week, HB 12 progressed to the full House Ed committee, and SB 44 progressed to the Rules committee.
Take Action!
Ask House Chairman Erwin for hearings for HB 42 and HB 245, two education funding bills we love! These bills would make long-needed adjustments to our outdated school funding formula to support school transportation systems and students living in poverty.
