Lincoln-Douglas Debates

How can we understand the conflicts and issues afflicting the United States prior to the outbreak of the Civil War by examining the Lincoln Douglas Debates? This lesson, geared for 7th, 8th, and 11th graders, will examine and analyze primary source documents. Students will compare viewpoints of Republicans and Democrats during the 19th century and understand the conflicts that led to a growing feeling of sectionalism prior to the Civil War.
